French Salt is a Gourmet Salt

 

Sea Salt is becoming more and more popular among both professional and amateur chefs, and is being called for more often in popular recipes. What is not so well known is that there are many different types of Sea Salt that originate from different parts of the world, and each has unique characteristics that make them unique. I would like to explore 3 different ones today, namely Alaea, Black Kala Namek Salt, and Sel Gris French Sea Salt.

Alaea is the traditional Hawaiian Sea Salt used for seasoning and preserving. Alaea Hawaiian Sea Salt is non-processed and rich in trace minerals that are found in sea water. It is red because of volcanic red clay in the area that contains iron oxide. They provide a unique and pleasant flavor while roasting or grilling meats. It is the authentic seasoning for native Hawaiian Dishes such as Hawaiian Jerky and Poke.

Alaea Salt is traditionally used by Hawaiians in ceremonies to cleanse, purify and in healing rituals for medicinal purposes. It is used for sore cuts, throats, aches, muscle sprains, scrapes, tissue infections and also for cold sores. The clay draws out toxins and infections. This is a great salt to be used on meats because the salt actually retains the moisture that is lost with cooking or grilling.

Black Salt, also known as Kala Namak, is a special type of Indian Mineral Salt with a distinctive flavor. Black Salt is not black but reddish-gray due to the presence of trace minerals and iron. It is rich in iron and helps to cure heartburn. Black Salt is known for its therapeutic benefits in Ayurveda.

Black Salt is the most beneficial form of salt as they don't increase the sodium content of blood so they are recommended for patients with high blood pressure. It is also known to improve eyesight digestive system and soften the bowel. Black Salt is regularly used in small quantities in chutneys, pickles and many other savory Indian snacks thereby adding a very different flavor rather than using regular salt.

Sel Gris French Sea Salt is fine grey and has a unique color that makes it truly beautiful. Grey salt from the salt ponds of Guerande France are completely natural and unrefined. The exceptional French clay in these ponds add valuable minerals and nutrients that enhance both the nutritional value and flavor of these salts. Sel Gris French Sea Salt is the most rigorous salt certification process in terms of purity and quality.

This salt is harvested as the water evaporates from moist basins and leaves the crusty saline as residue. Naturally moist grey salt is an unrefined form of salt sought with rich mineral content. It has a sharper flavor than Fleur de Sel and is an excellent cooking salt. It can be used to bake bread and even on roasted, and works really well in soups.
